THE PITFALLS OF WASTED SPACE

Part of the reason large homes have so much wasted space is because our houses are often designed for others; because we are concerned about resale; and because we add in spaces and functions for what I call “outlier” activities.

This is best exemplified by guest rooms and formal dining rooms. Both are types of rooms that most modern large houses have, and at the same time they are so seldom used. It is here where we fall into the trap of being concerned about our home’s resale value and the outlier activities.

Common outlier spaces include:

guest bedroom

living room

formal dining room

rooms to “grow into”
